Spring is a welcome time of year, except when it brings heavy rains, severe weather and melting snow that lead to a flooded basement. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0If you have ever had to deal with the mess and expense of a wet basement, you know that it is on the short list of a homeowner’s worst nightmares! \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Fortunately, there are some simple steps you can take to prevent a flooded basement and minimize the damage caused by unwanted water. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Here’s where to start:<\/p>\n

1. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Clear away snow that is near the house<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To prevent melting snow from running down basement walls, get out a shovel and move snow piled up around the perimeter of your house back three to five feet.<\/p>\n

The most common causes of basement leaks are cracks in the foundation that let water enter during a storm. Inspect your basement and repair any cracks. Minor cracks\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<\/span>can be repaired easily from within with caulking. More severe cracks may require a hiring a professional to to waterproof your basement.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moisture, mold and water damage from a flooded basement are constant threats. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Move anything stored in your basement that is not waterproof to higher ground or onto a shelf and relocate important papers and valuables to an upstairs room, closet or attic.<\/p>\n

Review your property insurance policy and consider additional coverage, especially if you have a finished basement. Only flood insurance covers flood damage. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0And remember that it typically takes 30 days for a new flood insurance policy to go into effect, so get your policy now.<\/p>\n
