{"id":6795,"date":"2016-02-05T11:00:02","date_gmt":"2016-02-05T16:00:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/?p=6795"},"modified":"2017-03-13T12:27:13","modified_gmt":"2017-03-13T16:27:13","slug":"how-to-thaw-a-frozen-pipe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/index.php\/how-to-thaw-a-frozen-pipe\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Thaw a Frozen Pipe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve written a lot about how to prevent a frozen pipe disaster by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/index.php\/make-winterizing-your-home-a-diy-weekend-project\/\" target=\"_blank\">preparing your home for winter<\/a><\/strong> and protecting it with a <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-187-freeze-alarms-temperature-alarms.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-187-freeze-alarms-temperature-alarms.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">freeze alarm<\/a><\/strong>. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0In this article we&#8217;ll discuss what to do if you discover a frozen pipe in your home and how to thaw it properly to prevent expensive and messy water damage in your house.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/index.php\/what-you-can-do-to-prevent-a-frozen-pipes-disaster\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6814\" title=\"A freeze alarm is one way to prevent a frozen pipe disaster.\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Wien_Frozen_Pipes_2311358162.jpg\" alt=\"frozen pipes\" width=\"446\" height=\"297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em>Why Do Pipes Freeze?<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Very cold winter weather or a drop in indoor temperature due to a furnace failure or power outage can cause pipes to freeze. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Some pipes are more at risk of freezing than others, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pipes in unheated areas<\/li>\n<li>Pipes located in exterior walls<\/li>\n<li>Pipes in under-insulated walls<\/li>\n<li>Any outdoor plumbing, such as water spigots and sprinkler systems.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em>How to Locate a Frozen Pipe<\/em><\/h2>\n<p>Start by looking at those pipes that are visible. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Pipes coated in frost or bulging are likely to be frozen. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Of course, not all of the pipes in your house are visible. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0If you notice that water isn&#8217;t flowing from your faucet or your toilet isn&#8217;t refilling after you flush, that&#8217;s a sign that you have a frozen pipe.<\/p>\n<p>Since water expands when it freezes but pipes do not, there&#8217;s a good chance that your pipes will leak or crack from the pressure of the expanding water if you do nothing. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Instead, take immediate action and follow these steps to\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0locate where the frozen pipes are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Begin by turning off the water main supply to prevent water from gushing out once the pipe is thawed.<\/li>\n<li>Next, open all of the taps around the house.<\/li>\n<li>If water isn&#8217;t running anywhere in the house, a pipe near the water meter may be frozen. Touch the water meter and the adjacent exposed pipes. If they are very cold, they are probably frozen.<\/li>\n<li>If water runs in only one part of the house, a pipe in an outside wall or un-insulated crawl space is probably frozen. Open kitchen and bathroom sink cabinets to allow warm air from the house to warm the pipes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><em><strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/default.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6815\" title=\"Open all water faucets in the house to locate which pipes are frozen.\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.diycontrols.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/openfaucet.jpeg\" alt=\"open faucets\" width=\"335\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><\/strong>How to Thaw a Frozen Pipe<\/em><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Open faucets:<\/strong> \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Once you have located the frozen pipe, open the affected faucet all the way. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Next, open all of the other hot water faucets in the house. When the water is flowing in the affected pipe, close all the faucets to a trickle. Do not close the affected faucet until the pipe is completely thawed and the water is flowing freely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Heat frozen pipes:<\/strong> \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0The safest &#8212; and neatest &#8212; thawing methods involve a gentle heat source such as a hair dryer, heat lamp or household iron. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Start from the interior faucet end of the pipe, and work your way toward colder end of the pipe to keep steam from being trapped by ice and bursting the pipe. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0You can also pouring boiling water over rags or towels and wrap them around a frozen pipe, however, this method is messy. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Never pour boiling water directly onto a frozen pipe. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Wrapping the affected area with thermostatically controlled heat tape is another effective way to quickly thaw frozen pipes. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<em><strong>Note:<\/strong> \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Never use a propane torch or other open flame to thaw a pipe because it can heat the pipe too quickly and cause it to explode.<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>Check for leaks:<\/strong> \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0With the faucet open, you will see when the ice in the pipe has melted because the water will begin to flow. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0After pipes have thawed, turn off all water to faucets and the icemaker and monitor the water meter for any unseen leaks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em>If a Pipe Bursts<\/em><\/h2>\n<div class=\"ParagraphText\">\n<ol>\n<li>Shut off water at the main valve.<\/li>\n<li>If the break is in a hot water pipe, close the the valve on top of the water heater.<\/li>\n<li>Call a plumber immediately.
