Barbara suffers from emphysema and depends upon her <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/dci\/Diseases\/oxt\/oxt_whatis.html');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/health\/dci\/Diseases\/oxt\/oxt_whatis.html\" target=\"_blank\">oxygen machine to breathe<\/a>. She also has severe hearing loss. So even though the oxygen machine\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s power alarm sounded when the electricity went out, she was fast asleep and didn\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t hear it.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cIt was a warm summer night and I woke up because I felt so warm,\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d Barbara explained. \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cI started to get out of bed to adjust the A\/C, but I nearly collapsed because I was completely out of breath. That\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s when I realized that the power was out and I wasn\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t getting oxygen! I tried not to panic and used my cell phone to call 911 to have the EMTs hook me up to my portable oxygen supply.\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/p>\n<p>What can be done to prevent a similar crisis from happening the next time there\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s a power failure, my friend wondered? Her physician recommended putting a <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-7066-power-failure-alarm-failed-circuit-alarm.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-7066-power-failure-alarm-failed-circuit-alarm.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">power failure alarm<\/a> in her bedroom that would wake her up during power outages. The key was to find one with a buzzer that was sufficiently loud.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Barbara assigned the task to her son and he was able to locate a device called a \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201c<a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-7066-power-failure-alarm-failed-circuit-alarm.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-7066-power-failure-alarm-failed-circuit-alarm.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">failed circuit alarm<\/a>\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d that has an 85 to 90 dB buzzer to notify you of a power failure. Its control box and alarm are at the end of a 15-foot cord so he mounted that right next to Barbara\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s bed so she\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2d have no trouble hearing it. The alarm has a piggyback style plug, so another electric appliance can utilize the same outlet, and a 9-volt battery that powers the alarm for 36+ hours. It was the perfect solution!<\/p>\n<p>\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cI am determined to live independently for as long as I can,\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d Barbara says, \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cand with this new power failure alarm, I can fall asleep without fearing that I\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ll lose my oxygen supply in the middle of the night.\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d<\/p>\n<p>Well, I myself had never heard of a power failure alarm or a failed circuit alarm, but I think that they\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2d be really handy to have in any home, especially to alert you of <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9435-refrigeratorfreezer-power-outage-alert-set.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9435-refrigeratorfreezer-power-outage-alert-set.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">power outages or tripped circuits<\/a> that could critically affect home appliances like refrigerators, freezers and computers. I discovered that some power failure alarms can even be <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-6183-power-failure-emergency-siren-and-dialer-kit.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-6183-power-failure-emergency-siren-and-dialer-kit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">upgraded with an autodialer<\/a> that will call you on the phone when the power goes out \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 which would be a great thing to have at a vacation house for when you aren\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t there.
