Remove water and debris from the top of the pool cover.<\/h2>\n<p>Lifting the pool cover is a lot easier and less messy if you first drain off the water that has collected on the cover over the winter.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 A <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-441-pool-cover-pumps.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-441-pool-cover-pumps.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">submersible pool cover pump<\/a><\/strong> will greatly speed up this process.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Once the water is drained from the cover, clean off as much debris (branches, leaves, etc.) as you can.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0<strong><em>Note:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The pool cover stays on until <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">after<\/span> you have adjusted water level and chemistry.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>2. Add water to raise level to normal height.<\/h2>\n<p>Most pools lose water during the winter.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Using a garden hose, top off the water level of the pool to raise it to normal height.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3. Test your pool water for pH, alkalinity, bromine and chlorine.<a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-442-water-testing-products.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-442-water-testing-products.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"DIY pool and spa test kits make it easy to check water chemistry.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/images\/Product\/medium\/9104.jpg\" alt=\"AquaChek TruTest v2.2 Digital Test Strip Reader\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<p>Testing the chemistry of your pool water is an important step for a clean and safe swimming environment.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Do-it-yourself <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-442-water-testing-products.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/c-442-water-testing-products.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pool and spa test kits<\/a><\/strong> that use <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9103-aquachek-trutest-test-strip-refills-50-or-100.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9103-aquachek-trutest-test-strip-refills-50-or-100.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test strips<\/a><\/strong> make water testing easy and accurate.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Look for models with digital and automated color matching readouts for best results.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Ideal levels should be:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 pH \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 7.2 to 7.6; total alkalinity \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 80 to 120 ppm \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0(parts per million); bromine \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 2.0 to 6.0 ppm; chlorine \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u20ac\u0153 1.0 to 3.0 ppm; and <\/em><em>calcium hardness from 150 to 250 ppm.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>4.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0Adjust and balance chemicals.<\/h2>\n<p>Based on the analysis you get back, you\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2ll need to add certain chemicals to adjust the water chemistry to ensure that it\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2s safe and comfortable for swimming. \u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0These chemicals include soda ash to increase pH; muriatic acid or sodium bisulfate to decrease pH; calcium chloride to adjust calcium hardness; and cyanuric acid to inhibit the sun&#8217;s ability to burn off chlorine.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Chemicals can be purchased at swimming pool supply stores and many hardware or home and garden stores or online.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>5. Wait for the water to clear, and then lift the cover.<\/h2>\n<p>Do not remove the pool cover until about a week after adding chemicals.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Run the circulation and filtration system continuously and wait for the clarity of the water to clear.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 The filter should be cleaned daily and you may have to add more chlorine.<\/p>\n<p>Once you can see the pool floor, carefully lift the pool cover off (best done with two people or more).\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Lay it somewhere flat and protected and brush off dust and debris.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Once it has air dried, sprinkle the cover with talcum powder to prevent mold and mildew buildup, fold it loosely and store it in a dry place for the season.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>6. These robotic cleaning machines roam the floor of the pool scrubbing and sucking up dirt and debris.\u00c3\u201a\u00c2\u00a0 Look for \u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c5\u201cself-contained\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00c2\u009d models that don\u00c3\u00a2\u00e2\u201a\u00ac\u00e2\u201e\u00a2t require a hose, booster pump or pool filter system connection. For removing bugs and leaves from the surface of the water, a <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9113-dunn-rite-jet-net-rc-boat-skimmer.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9113-dunn-rite-jet-net-rc-boat-skimmer.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">remote-controlled pool skimmer<\/a><\/strong> is another handy device to make cleanup fast and easy.<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the season, keep the filter clean, vacuum the pool at least once a week and <strong><a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('\/outgoing\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9104-aquachek-trutest-v22-digital-test-strip-reader.aspx');\"  href=\"http:\/\/www.diycontrols.com\/p-9104-aquachek-trutest-v22-digital-test-strip-reader.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">test the water chemistry<\/a><\/strong> every 2-3 days to maintain sparkling clean water.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>7. Inspect your pool safety equipment and make sure it is up to code.<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have finished with these pool opening steps &#8212; but <em>before<\/em> scheduling that first pool party &#8212;
