New Safety Turtle 2.0 Pool Alarm FAQs

Since its introduction over 16 years ago, the Safety Turtle pool alarm has been a favorite pool accessory for families wanting a reliable way to protect young children, non-swimmers and pets from drowning.  A few months ago, a redesigned Safety Turtle 2.0 system was launched and readers are asking us about the changes and if they should upgrade.  If you are also wondering whether to replace your old Safety Turtle system or are shopping for your first pool alarm, here’s what you need to know about the new Safety Turtle 2.0:New Safety Turtle 2.0 Child Immersion Pool/Water Alarm Kit

What is Safety Turtle 2.0?

Safety Turtle 2.0 is the latest version of the popular Safety Turtle “personal immersion” pool and water alarms by RJE Technologies, Inc.  It replaces the original Safety Turtle pool and water alarm that was introduced in the late 1990s. Like its predecessor, Safety Turtle 2.0 is designed to protect children, non-swimmers and pets from drowning.

What new features does the new Safety Turtle 2.0 pool alarm have?

In addition to an updated look, the Safety Turtle 2.0 Pool Alarm has these new features:

  • Smaller, streamlined portable base station;
  • Greatly improved transmission range — up to 200 feet direct line-of-sight vs. 150 feet for original model;
  • State-of-the-art water switch technology that helps reduce false alarms;
  • Low-battery indicator so you know when it’s time to replace the Turtles;
  • USB cord so you can use your computer to power the base station;
  • Easier to use — no more color-coding of base stations, Turtles and accessories.

How does Safety Turtle 2.0 work?

Like the original Safety Turtle system, Safety Turtle 2.0 Pool Alarm uses a turtle-shaped water-activated switch that is worn on your child’s wrist or attached to your pet’s collar.  The Turtle wristband attaches securely to a child’s wrist using the special locking key.  When the Turtle is submerged in water, it triggers a loud alarm at the base station that you keep in the house or another centrally located place, alerting parents or caregivers that your child or pet is at risk of drowning.  The alarm continues to sound until it is reset or the Turtle is wiped dry (a feature of the new 2.0 system).

What improvements were made to the water switch?

The turtle-shaped water switch has been completely redesigned after 16 years. It utilizes a system called “over molding” which seals the Turtle so it can be easily wiped off to stop the transmission of the radio signal if the alarm is activated accidentally. This feature was added in response to users who loved their Safety Turtle system but wanted an easy way to reduce false alarms, such as during hand washing or walking in the rain.

New Safety Turtle 2.0 Child Immersion Pool/Water Alarm KitIs the new Safety Turtle 2.0 system more expensive?

No, the price for a Safety Turtle 2.0 starter kit has remained the same.  The Safety Turtle 2.0 Kit for Children is priced at $144.99 and includes the base station, one green Turtle on a black wristband, a locking key to secure on child’s wrist, a AC power adapter and a USB cord.  The Safety Turtle 2.0 Kit for Pets, which includes a pet collar attachment instead of the wristband, sells for $134.99.  Additional Turtles on a wristband or a pet collar attachment can be purchased separately.

Where can I use my Safety Turtle 2.0 Pool Alarm?

The Safety Turtle 2.0 system is completely portable, so it can be used wherever your family will be swimming.  In addition to your own backyard pool, you can bring your Safety Turtle 2.0 system with you to a hotel, swim club or neighbor’s pool.  You can also use it at a lake, river or on a boat.  Safety Turtle 2.0 works in any body of fresh water and in salt water swimming pools, but not in the the ocean.  One Safety Turtle 2.0 base station can support an unlimited number of wristbands and pet collars. If there is no electrical outlet available to power the base station, the Safety Turtle 2.0 can be powered by plugging it into a computer using the USB cord.

Is Safety Turtle 2.0 compatible with the original Safety Turtle system?

No, Safety Turtle 2.0 is not compatible with the old system. Safety Turtle 2.0 wristbands and pet collars cannot be used with the base station of the original Safety Turtle system. Conversely, the wristbands, gate alarms and panic buttons from the old system will not work with the 2.0 system.

Does the manufacturer consider the original Safety Turtle system to be obsolete?

The old system is “obsolete” only in the sense that it is no longer manufactured.  However, the original Safety Turtle system is still reliable and can continue to be used until the batteries that power the Turtles are fully depleted (3 to 5 years).

New Safety Turtle 2.0 Pet Collar Attachment TurtleWhat are the main advantages of Safety Turtle 2.0 vs. other kinds of pool alarms?

A personal immersion pool and water alarm like Safety Turtle 2.0 provides continuous protection to the wearer with no risk that the unit has been deactivated while others are swimming or the pool is being cleaned. As the manufacturer puts it, “Safety Turtle is the only pool safety product that watches the child and not the water.”

The top advantages of the Safety Turtle 2.0 immersion alarm are:

  • As soon as a person or pet wearing a Turtle enters the water, the Safety Turtle base station alarms immediately;
  • The Safety Turtle 2.0 system requires no setup or installation — just plug it in to an AC outlet or USB port;
  • The same Safety Turtle 2.0 system protects both people and pets;
  • It’s completely portable and easy to pack, so you can take it with you on a boat or brought on vacation.
  • Unlike other types of pool alarms, Safety Turtle 2.0 works in all sizes of pools or spas and all types (i.e., above-ground and in-ground).

  1. We purchased the original Safety Turtle with an extra bracelet in 2000 when we had 2 toddler grandsons. We now have 2 great grand-daughters and I recently pulled out the original box with the safety turtles all intact. Unfortunately, the batteries in the bracelets are dead after 23 years and apparently are not replaceable. Everything seems to be in perfect condition. I wish the batteries were replaceable as we were well pleased with the original. Although we never had an emergency, we did have one instance when one of the toddlers found a bucket of water to play in. When the alarm sounded, it got everyone’s attention!
